This has been a big week for us in the library and a terribly unfortunate week for a certain teacher-librarian to loose her voice! But we're getting by. Here is a quick run-down of what we've been doing in Libraryland this week.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students have been learning about proper book care and their responsibilities as book patrons. We did some fantastic Book Care Acting this week, where we acted out what not to do with books. It is so fun to pretend to be a dog chewing a book to shreds. The contracts went home and are already coming back signed. Check out begins next week!
1st Grade
We have continued in our study of Fairy Tales, where we discussed the use of the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) to find the books we want and we read Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. Frankly, we didn't feel like it fit many of the elements typical of fairy tales, but it certainly had a group of 3!
2nd Grade
Second grade is moving through their mystery unit and analyzed the typical sequence of a mystery. In the beginning we discover the key characters and the problem. The middle usually has the detectives gathering evidence or clues and interviewing suspects and witnesses. In the end, of course, the mystery is solved. We read Albert's Halloween: Case of the Stolen Pumpkins to help us study this aspect of mysteries.
3rd Grade
This week third grade was introduced to their Super3 Research project through an oral retelling of Whale in the Sky, connecting the importance of salmon to Native American people. We will be comparing and contrasting the importance, catching and use of salmon among 2 different Native American tribes.
4th Grade
Dressed as Sacajewea, I retold "my" background from my start as the chief's daughter in the Shoshone tribe until my departure with baby Pomp and my husband Charbonneau on the adventure of a lifetime with Lewis and Clark. This was how we learned that we would be researching Lewis and Clark for our Big6 Research project.
5th Grade
Our fifth graders are studying the reasons why policies are put in place, how they are developed and evaluating their effectiveness. Our fifth grade teachers felt that studying something that the students know and use would be a good way for them to relate to this concept, so we are going to be researching the policy-making of our Make Your Day program and presenting the information to the students in our school through the creation of a brochure. We took a pre-assessment this week to see what we knew already about those topics and to see where our students thought would be the best place to go to get the information they need.
Library Club
Library Club training was held this week and our teams are ready to work. Students are already checking on the shelves they've adopted and pulling books for our recommendation shelf. We also have members coming in before school to write online book reviews. It is so fun to see the kids take so much ownership in the library!
Book Clubs
Book Clubs continued this week and I am very lucky to have some guest readers this week since my voice is not-so-hotso. My son, Luke in 4th grade, read to the 2nd grade book club and will read to the Caldecott Club tomorrow. Oh, how he LOVED to make the kids laugh! Today, since Luke had orchestra, one of our Library Club Captains, Karli in 5th grade, was a guest reader for my HUGE 3rd grade book club. She read to about 30 kids and did a fantastic job. I am so thankful to both Luke and Karli for helping me out. I was seriously impressed with their confidence and expressive reading!
