It was wonderful to see all of the students filling the halls of Lewis and Clark with smiles and hopes for a new school year. Seeing the new group of 5th graders always makes me feel old- how can these little guys be so grown up already? ;)
We had a busy week preparing for the Genre Challenge. The classes in grades 1-5 created portfolios to use with the checkout procedure this year. They will track the genres they're reading each week, graphing them and getting recognition each time they branch out and try a new genre. I can't wait to see the first student whack their CAT slip with a genre stamp!
My favorite thing I heard this week, besides all the warm welcomes back, was the comment a 4th grade student made to me today as he dropped off his contract (which must be returned in order for students to check out, by the way). He admired one of the Sasquatch nominees I was processing and said, "Mrs. F, do you think that book might fit in the mystery genre? I'd like to read it for the Genre Challenge."
Be still my teacher-librarian heart!!! :)
