Happy Mother's Day!

We sincerely hope that all of the mothers out there have a wonderful Mother's Day!  For the moms of L&C, here is what your children are up to in the library.

Kinders are just finishing up their frog unit with Mrs. Ferrell, having delved into using the Super3 Research model to solve information problems regarding finding the right type of frog book for the situation (fiction or non-fiction).  We even learned the Plan, Do, Review... Super3 Rap from Lala, our crazy singing bird puppet.  Our frog unit culminated with a cute lily pad project.  Our non-fiction frog hid underneath, with his label and realistic coloring, while the fiction frog bounced on top with his label and the kids' imaginations to make him do and wear things a non-fiction frog could never do in real life!  Some fiction frogs had moustaches and mohawks, while others were riding skateboards and jump roping.  Those crazy fiction frogs!

Mrs. Velazquez has been working with the kinders on a poetry unit and her 1st graders have been going very deep with poetry as well.  The "Poet Tree" is up in the library and her 1st graders are going to be performing a poem for their classes in the upcoming week or so.  How fun!

I am incredibly proud of our 2nd graders for learning how to search the OPAC, record the key information on a CAT slip, and using that information to go out and find the one book they are seeking out of 17,000!  This week was their first time out in the shelves and they did a great job in the fiction and everybody sections. Next week they take on the challenge of the non-fiction section where they will not only use alphabetic skills like they did in the other sections, but will have the additional challenge of numerical order followed by alphabetic order.  They need additional work on further developing their search skills, but they have made a great start!

3rd grade in is the middle of their Super3 project now.  We are currently practicing note-taking from print resources in preparation for our weather-related projects.  Hurricanes and tornadoes have been what has gotten our students excited about weather!

4th grade are completing their Big6 projects and some are currently up in the hallway with a full project outline.  We hope you'll check them out!  Next is a historical fiction/Newbery unit that we are very excited about.  The students are dying for some literature after all that hard work on the research project.  We feel you on that one!

5th grade is doing some additional work on evaluating Internet resources and completing searches online.  With the vastness of the Internet, it is difficult to always find the quality resources you need among the thousands of results.  As our students continue on in their academic careers, the proper, safe and effective use of the Internet is one of the skill sets we cannot afford to let slip through the cracks.  Having a qualified teacher-librarian to help them learn these skills is vital and we are happy to deliver!

Again, Happy Mother's Day to all of you wonderful mothers.  It is a joy to teach your children and help them grow their information literacy skills as well as help their love of high quality literature flourish!
